Week 9 of the NWSL season presented some spectacular moments from the U.S. Women’s National Team player pool. Ashley Hatch and Sam Coffey scored while Coffey and Tara McKeown recorded assists.
As the European seasons conclude, USWNT players raised trophies over the weekend in the FA Cup Final and Première Ligue Final. Naomi Girma and Catarina Macario — who scored off the bench — won the FA Cup with Chelsea FC, while Lindsey Heaps and Olympique Lyon, now OL Lyonnes, won the Première Ligue playoffs.
SAM COFFEY WITH THE ASSIST AND SCORE
Within just one-half of play, Sam Coffey assisted and scored a goal of her own in the Portland Thorns' (4-2-4, 16 points) dominant 4-1 win against the Houston Dash. It was Coffey’s first goal of the 2025 season and her second assist.
In the 30th minute, Coffey assisted Payton Linnehan on a long over-the-top pass. The Thorns scored their first goal in the 26th minute, before Coffey set up the second and then coolly netted the third from the penalty spot. All before halftime.
The Thorns scored again in the 54th minute and only a Thorns’ own goal allowed the Dashto get on the scoreboard, but by then Coffey and company had already put the match to bed. Portland is currently fourth in the NWSL.
ASHLEY HATCH NETS FIFTH GOAL
Ashley Hatch scored her fifth goal of the season in a nail-biting 3-3 draw against the Utah Royals. Hatch scored off an impressive turnaround shot from distance and a tight angle in the 17th minute to bag the equalizer.
It was Hatch’s fifth goal of the season which is second across the league. Hatch nearly came away with six total goals by the final whistle, but USWNT goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn saved Hatch’s penalty kick attempt. The Washington Spirit scored two more goals, including a last-second (90+12) goal by 2024 Olympic gold medalist Casey Krueger on an assist from Tara McKeown. The Spirit currently (5-1-3, 16 points) sits No. 5 in the NWSL standings.
CATARINA MACARIO AND NAOMI GIRMA RAISE FA CUP
Chelsea (19-0-3, 60 points) went on quite a run this season, in part, thanks to USWNT players Catarina Macario and Naomi Girma. The Blues completed a domestic treble, winning the Women’s Super League, WSL Cup and FA Cup — all while staying unbeaten in English competition.
Macario scored in her second-straight match in Chelsea’s 3-0 win over Manchester United to claim the FA Cup title at a packed Wembley Stadium, beating USWNT ‘keeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce. Macario subbed on in the 62nd minute and headed home the goal in the 84th minute off a free kick assist from Sandy Baltimore. Baltimore also recorded a brace in the win.
LINDSEY HEAPS ASSISTS IN PREMIÈRE LIGUE FINAL
In another European final in Europe, Lindsey Heaps helped lead OL Lyonnes (20-0-2, 62 points) to a 3-0 victory over rival Paris Saint-Germain in the Première Ligue Final at Groupama Stadium in Lyon, where Heaps and the USWNT won the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup Final.
It was the second year of France’s top women’s division playoffs, and the second time the Lyonnes beat PSG after also winning the four-team playoff in 2024. Heaps played 90 minutes and assisted on the first goal of the match in first-half stoppage time. On a promising attack, Heaps found Haitian Melchie Dumornay with a perfectly placed pass into the left side of the box.
On the opposing side, USWNT midfielders Korbin Albert played 83 minutes and Crystal Dunn added 66 minutes for PSG.
LILY YOHANNES SUBS AND SCORES
Lily Yohannes subbed on for Ajax Amsterdam (17-3-2, 53 points) in the 46th minute and scored soon after in the 52nd minute. Yohannes notched the equalizer with a header off a cross. It was the 17-year-old’s sixth goal of the season.
After Yohannes’ equalizer, Ajax ultimately beat Excelsior 3-1 with two goals in stoppage time from Bo Tess van Egmond (90+1) and Rosa van Gool (90+5). Ajax finished third in the Eredivisie Vrouwe, the top Dutch women’s division.
