ATLANTA (August 13, 2025) –The weather gods and soccer gods finally cooperated long enough for Philadelphia Union and New York Red Bulls to settle their Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinal fixture this evening at Subaru Park in Chester, Pa. After a five-week postponement and another two-hour delay it was Philadelphia that finally broke through, overcoming a pair of deficits and grabbing an 89th minute game-winner from Olwethu Makhanyato punch their ticket to the Semifinals via a 3-2 home victory.
The stars shined brightly despite the clouds, with a pair of 15-goal scorers in MLS regular season action – Philadelphia’s Tai Bariboand New York’s Eric Choupo-Moting– both hitting the back of the net. However, the South African center back Makhanya became the unlikely hero, his rebound goal in the waning moments sending Philadelphia to the Semifinal Round for a fifth time. The Union’s most recent Semifinal appearance in 2018 lead to the last of their three runner-up finishes in U.S. Soccer’s Club Championship tournament.
Philadelphia moves on to face Nashville SC in Music City in the first Open Cup Semifinal on Sept. 16. The following evening, Minnesota United FC will welcome Austin FC to the Twin Cities for the second Semifinal. A first-time Open Cup winner will be crowned on Oct. 1, with the winner of the Minnesota/Austin contest set to host the Final of the 110th edition of the U.S. Open Cup.

Philadelphia entered the match as the clear favorite, courtesy of their status atop MLS’ Supporters Shield standings and a 15-match undefeated streak (11-0-4) over the Red Bulls that has spanned the entirety of the 2020’s.
That context made Wiki Carmona’s eighth minute opener for the visitors all the more shocking. The Venezuelan gathered a clearance from goalkeeper A.J. Marcucci that bounced near the edge of the attacking third and had to beat just one defender before lashing past a surprised Andre Blake from nearly 30 yards.
New York’s lead lasted barely five minutes though, as a Union set piece paid dividends in the 13th. Kai Wagner’s delivery towards the penalty spot was flicked by Indiana Vassilev to the back post, where Tai Baribo neatly tucked inside the right stick to even things quickly.
The middle of the first half devolved into a physical back-and-forth, but Noah Eile’s 33rd minute header that forced Blake into a tip save over his crossbar snapped things back into focus. Serge Ngona’s open header at the six in the 42nd minute was sent over, but indicative of a Red Bulls side that had taken firm control of the attacking reins. While New York registered the last six shots of the stanza they still had only the opener to show for it, and the sides re-entered the locker rooms even at ones.
It was the Union that wrestled control to start the second half while the physical play continued. Quinn Sullivan had two bites of the apple around the hour mark, sending a tantalizing set piece from just outside the area and a 14-yard lash off a counterattack both wide right.
New York head coach Sandro Schwarz kept his biggest attacking card in hand until the 64th minute, when he inserted former Bayern Munich striker and Cameroonian international Eric Maxim Choupo-Motinginto the match. It took only six minutes for the move to pay off, as his classy first-touch redirect of Dylan Nealis’ cross into the upper left corner gave the Red Bulls the lead again – one that again evaporated quickly, this time after only three minutes.
This time Baribo played provider for Philly, his cross from the right flank setting up newcomer Milan Iloski for the equalizer in the 74th minute. After he scored ten goals for his hometown San Diego FC across the first half of the MLS regular season, Iloski’s slick, near-post finishmarked a pivotal account opener just eight days after his signing for the Union.
With even more “Open Cup After Dark” looming, Philadelphia continued their push to end things in regulation – and they managed just that in the 89th minute. Marcucci made a play to punch out a set piece cross, but it only made it as far as Olwethu Makhanya near the six yard box. His diagonal shot across frame snuck through traffic and inside the left post to give the Union their first lead of the evening none too soon.
Unfortunately for New York, injury was added to the insult of failing behind late, as Marcucci suffered a leg injury on the play that forced him from the field for an eventual seven minutes of stoppage time. A Choupo-Moting blast early in stoppage caused one final nervy moment for Philadelphia, which saw things through to continue their chase for a first piece of Cup hardware.

About the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup
Now in its 110th edition, the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup has crowned U.S. Soccer’s national champion since 1914. The history-filled tournament is conducted on a single-game-knockout basis and is open to professional and amateur teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. In 1999, the oldest ongoing national soccer competition in the U.S. was renamed to honor American soccer pioneer Lamar Hunt.
