ATLANTA (May 20, 2025) – Chicago Fire FC and the San Jose Earthquakes both advanced from the Round of 16 of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, U.S. Soccer’s Club Championship, on Tuesday night, albeit in drastically different fashions.
Chicago is aiming to become the first Major League Soccer (Division I) club to win five Open Cup titles, and its efficient 3-1 win at the New England Revolution in Providence, R.I. kept that initiative intact. The triumph saw a first-choice Fire side smother the rotated Revs from the opening whistle by carrying 63% of the possession and choosing quality over quantity in attack, with its damage coming on just four shots. While Gregg Berhalter has compiled myriad accolades on the field and the sideline, Open Cup success has always eluded the new Chicago head man – but perhaps the Fire’s dedication to the Cup is already rubbing off, as tonight marked the first time in eight tries as a player (LA Galaxy, 2010-11) or coach (Columbus Crew, 2014-18) Berhalter has won multiple games in a tournament run.
The only “After Dark” kickoff of the Round of 16 came in the Bay Area and saw San Jose and the Portland Timbers deliver the late-night drama Cup fans have come to expect. Jack Skahan’s tally deep into the second period of added extra time gave the home-standing ‘Quakes a 1-0 victory in its first intra-MLS affair in Open Cup action since 2022 – when San Jose needed a 10-9 result in PKs to finish off Seattle Sounders FC in the Round of 32. To keep the theme of former USMNT managers performing reclamation projects in MLS going, in his first season on the San Jose bench Bruce Arena has quickly ushered the Earthquakes into the Quarterfinals – and two games away from snapping their mark of 20 Cup appearances without making the Final (the most for an MLS side).
The Round of 16 closes out with six contests on Wednesday which, like every match onward to the tournament Final, will stream live on Paramount+. New England Revolution (MLS) 1-3 Chicago Fire FC (MLS)
The Men in Red put on a ruthless road clinic at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium on the campus of Providence College, downing the Revolution with three goals from as many shots on target. In fact, Chicago carried a 1-0 lead from a stingy first half without registering a shot in the books, their first danger near goal coming 38 minutes in from Jonathan Bomba’s tight-angled cross towards the far right post. The ball immediately deflected off the foot of Revs defender Eric Klein, who earned the own goal after ‘keeper Alex Bono was left stranded with his near post open. A near carbon copy of that play doubled Chicago’s lead in the 69th minute. Brian Gutierrez’s low ball from the right side of the area hit a New England defender inside the six, then the crossbar before looping to Hugo Cuypers eight yards from goal. The Belgian’s first touch of the evening in the attacking third was a side-winding volley that was well worth the wait, Chicago’s first official shot on goal giving them a 2-0 advantage. Ten minutes later, the result was assured through a touch of class by Philip Zinckernagel, who danced into the area and through no less than four defenders before lashing home from near the spot. Another own goal two minutes from time that bounced off Chicago’s Justin Reynolds gave the Revolution a tally but no consolation, as the Fire sealed only the second meeting in Open Cup play between the two longtime MLS rivals.
San Jose Earthquakes (MLS) 0-0, 1-0 (aet) Portland Timbers (MLS)
It took 116 minutes, but the San Jose Earthquakes finally struck their way into the U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinal. The Earthquakes and Portland Timbers needed extra time to decide their Round of 16 match, but Jack Skahan and Mark-Anthony Kaye made sure it was decided in the extra 30 minutes instead of penalty kicks. Skahan, officially credited with the goal, got a last-second touch off an assist from Anthony Kaye. The Canadian midfielder controlled the ball on the left side of the box and made a patient, well-timed strike that Skahan toed into the net. Before that, the ‘Quakes had their opportunities, but while they couldn’t find the net on their first 28 shots – including nine on goal – they finally made attempt No. 29 count. The Timbers had 14 shots, five on goal, and were increasingly on the back foot as the match wound deeper. San Jose moves on as one of the final eight teams in the chase for the 2025 trophy, and have now made their deepest tournament run since their 2017 Semifinal appearance.
About the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup
Now in its 110th edition, the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup has crowned U.S. Soccer’s national champion since 1914. The history-filled tournament is conducted on a single-game-knockout basis and is open to professional and amateur teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. In 1999, the oldest ongoing national soccer competition in the U.S. was renamed to honor American soccer pioneer Lamar Hunt.
The 2025 U.S. Open Cup winner will earn a berth in the 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup and have its name engraved on the Dewar Challenge Trophy – one of the oldest nationally contested trophies in American team sports – now on permanent display at the National Soccer Hall of Fame in Frisco, Texas. The 2025 tournament features a total purse worth $1 million that includes a $600,000 award for the champion.
Los Angeles Football Club of MLS is the defending Champion. The 109th edition of the tournament concluded on September 25, 2024, with LAFC beating four-time Champions Sporting Kansas City 3-1 at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles to become Open Cup Champions for the first time.
