BEACH WNT FALLS ON PENALTIES TO SWITZERLAND IN OPENING MATCH OF EL SALVADOR CUP
Vanessa Valentine and Hannah Adler Register Goals;
Leah Morales and Braeden Small Earn International Debuts
SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador (Feb. 14, 2025) – The U.S. Women’s Beach Soccer National Team received goals from Vanessa Valentine and Hannah Adler to tie Switzerland 2-2, but were ultimately upended 8-7 on penalty kicks in the opening match of the 2025 El Salvador Beach Soccer Cup at Flor Blanca Beach Soccer Stadium on Friday.
The first period featured a Valentine’s Day special as Vanessa Valentine got the USA on the board inside the first minute. A miscue at the back saw Switzerland goalkeeper Joélle Zellweger play the ball short for captain Ramona Inderwildi, and Valentine alertly lunged forward to poke the ball into the empty net from 20 yards out. The goal was the third of Valentine’s international career and first since March 28, 2024 against England in the opening match of the El Salvador Cup.
Play evened out through the rest of the period, with Switzerland forcing two saves out of U.S. ‘keeper Gabby Batmani while Marissa Vasquez had a chance to make it 2-0 late, but Zellweger denied her to keep it 1-0 heading into the first intermission.
The USA got its second goal just a minute into the second period. Zellweger juggled the ball forward, but misjudged her space and Hannah Adler was able to intercept. The reigning two-time Women’s Beach Soccer Player of the Year knocked it away from the Swiss goalkeeper before burying her 15th career goal in the empty net.
Switzerland clawed back into the match at the midway point of the second period as Michelle Eisenegger lobbed a ball from midfield that rattled off the cross bar. The ball fell straight down into the path of Tanisha Williams who slid through to bury her first international goal and take the teams into the break with the USA leading 2-1.
In search of the equalizer, the Swiss dominated play throughout the third period and found the tying goal with just over a minute left. After earning a corner kick, Andrea Küffer ran to the flag and played a quick, low ball to Bianca Flury who redirected past Batmani at the near post to send the match to extra time.
Beach WNT head coach Morgan Church swapped captain Jeané Sunseri-Warp into goal for the extra time period, with the veteran making two big saves in the first minute which proved vital in sending the match to penalty kicks.
In the shootout, the first seven takers for each team converted their penalties, before Adler’s effort clanged off the right post. With the advantage, Switzerland’s Ramona Inderwildi stepped up and slotted her take past substitute goalkeeper Vanessa Amaral to give Switzerland the win on penalty kicks.

BEACH WNT RUNS TO DOMINANT 7-1 WIN AGAINST COSTA RICA
Adler and Chronopoulos Bag Braces While Haimes, Sunseri-Warp and Morales Also Found Back of the Net
SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador (Feb. 15, 2025) – The U.S. Women’s Beach Soccer National Team got braces from Hannah Adler and Makenzie Chronopoulos, as well as single strikes from Nikki Haimes, Jeanè Sunseri-Warp and Leah Morales to earn a comprehensive 7-1 win against Costa Rica in the second match of the 2025 El Salvador Beach Soccer Cup at Flor Blanca Beach Soccer Stadium on Saturday.
After some back-and-forth play early, two of the team’s newest players – Leah Morales and Marissa Vasquez --- linked up to create the first goal. Morales started the buildup, making a great move in the back to earn space through midfield before threading a ball to Morales on the right. Riding the ball to the end line, Morales quickly centered for Chronopoulos who redirected home at the left post for her fourth international goal.
The USA went up 2-0 through Adler with 4:35 left in the first. The play began after Adler was upended and earned a free kick about 25 yards from goal. On the take, her right-footed effort clanged off the left post and was recycled back to Jeané Sunseri-Warp, whose cross from the left hit the right post and fell for Adler to finish from close range.
It took just 12 more seconds for the U.S. to add a third. Nikki Haimes possessed the ball in the defensive end, and without much pressure, pushed past a Costa Rica defender before hitting a swerving ball from midfield that tucked inside the left post to send the USA into the first break with a 3-0 lead.
The USA continued to threaten, and made it 4-0 two minutes into the second period. Kilee Quigley juggled then volleyed a looping ball from distance that Costa Rica ‘keeper Montserrat Benavides spilled in front of goal. There, Sunseri-Warp alertly pounced and buried her 10th international goal to make it 4-0 with 10:17 remaining in the second.
Sunseri-Warp had a chance at a second goal from the penalty spot, but pulled her effort wide left of goal with seven minutes remaining. But the U.S. captain recovered quickly from the miss, playing provider on the fifth goal about 30 seconds later when she threaded a pass for Adler through the middle, who then fired home her second of the match. The goal was Adler’s 17th international tally, moving her past Lauren Leslie for sole possession of second on the Beach WNT’s all-time scoring list.
Costa Rica pulled it back to 5-1 through Mindy Arias with 4:30 remaining, but the USA was unrelenting. With under a minute left, Sunseri-Warp juggled forward before looping a ball off the cross bar. It careened back in front of goal where Chronopoulos laid out to slam home her second of the game and fifth international goal to take the U.S. into the second intermission with a 6-1 lead.
The USA made it 7-1 from the penalty spot four minutes into the third period. Gabby Batmani threw the ball forward where Vivian Oray challenged a Costa Rica defender before the ball hit the player’s hand in the penalty area. Oray quickly grabbed the ball and handed it to Morales who calmly slotted her spot kick inside the lower right post to claim her first international goal in just her second cap and close out the U.S. win.
ADDITIONAL NOTES:
- Hannah Adler’s brace marked the fourth multi-goal game of her international career and took her to 17 goals in 17 caps, placing her just one behind Kilee Quigley (18 goals) for the Beach WNT’s all-time lead.
- Makenzie Chronopoulos recorded the first multi-goal game of her international career, taking her total to five goals in 20 caps. By hitting 20 caps, Chronopoulos also became eligible for selection to the National Soccer Hall of Fame upon retirement.

- Leah Morales recorded her first international goal in just her second appearance.

BEACH WNT FALLS 3-2 TO EL SALVADOR IN FINAL MATCH OF 2025 EL SALVADOR BEACH SOCCER CUP
Haimes and Sunseri-Warp Tally U.S. Goals
SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador (Feb. 16, 2025) – The U.S. Women’s Beach Soccer National Team received goals from Nikki Haimes and Jeanè Sunseri-Warp, but ultimately fell 3-2 to hosts El Salvador in the decisive match of the 2025 El Salvador Beach Soccer Cup at Flor Blanca Beach Soccer Stadium on Sunday.
El Salvador went up about five minutes into the first period as goalkeeper Yahaira Maravilla juggled before blasting an effort that crept inside the lower right post at 7:22. The hosts then bagged a second a minute later as Irma Cordero’s free kick caught Gabby Batmani by surprise, sneaking inside the lower left post at 6:23.
The U.S. pulled one back with just 30 seconds left in the first. Makenzie Chronopoulos played a ball forward from midfield to Nikki Haimes. She cleverly touched to Hannah Adler who pushed the ball past Maravilla for Haimes to poke home at the left post, leaving El Salvador with a 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission.
The U.S. had the better of the play through the early going of a physical second period, but El Salvador restored its two-goal lead about four minutes in when Jeanè Sunseri-Warp’s misplayed back pass got past Batmani and trickled over the goal line to make it 3-1.
Sunseri-Warp made amends in the third period, earning a free kick in the U.S. defensive end with about seven minutes remaining. The U.S. captain lined up over the dead ball and hit a blistering effort that slid past Maravilla to pull the Beach WNT within a goal. The USA was awarded another free kick at midfield with three minutes remaining and Sunseri-Warp cranked her effort off the left post, while Adler’s follow-up shot fell just short of the goal line.
Despite threatening late, the U.S. could not muster an equalizer, falling 3-2 to the hosts to finish third at the 2025 El Salvador Cup.
