As the U.S. Men's National Team’s October camp kicks off this week, several players will arrive in Austin, Texas in fine scoring form.
Christian Pulisic volleyed home an unbelievable goal for AC Milan as he continued his hot Serie A scoring streak, while Josh Sargent and Haji Wright tallied for Norwich City and Coventry City in wins, respectively.
Elsewhere, Folarin Balogun, Paxten Aaronson, John Tolkin and Kellyn Acosta also found the net.
The USMNT will welcome Panama in Austin, Texas on Oct. 12, before visiting Mexico in Guadalajara at Estadio Akron three days later on Oct. 15.
PLAYING SOME VOLLEY BALL
Sunday, Christian Pulisic pulled off a sensational finish for AC Milan in its 2-1 loss at Fiorentina in Italy’s Serie A.
Pulisic volleyed home a left-wing cross from Theo Hernandez past goalkeeper David de Gea to equalize in the 60th minute. As de Gea moved toward where the cross was heading on the right side, Pulisic stuck out his right foot and with the inside of his boot, redirected it and curled it into the opposite corner. Pulisic, who has now scored in four successive Serie A games, has recorded five goals in seven Serie A matches overall this season.
Milan is in sixth place in Serie A with a 3-2-2 record and 11 points, trailing Napoli (5-1-1, 16) by five points.
RETURNING TO FORM
A week after setting up two goals, Josh Sargent himself got back on the score sheet with goals in each of Norwich City's games last week. On Tuesday, Oct. 1, he converted a 15th-minute penalty kick in the Canaries' 1-1 draw with Leeds United in the English Championship. On Friday, Oct. 4, the 24-year-old striker found the net again as he put home a Borja Sanz cross to double the lead in the 20th minute in a 4-0 rout at home over Hull City.
Sargent has scored seven goals in nine appearances for Norwich City (4-2-3, 15), which is in seventh place.
WRIGHT ON
With Coventry City already leading Blackburn Rovers by a goal, Haji Wright scored his third goal of the season to give the hosts some breathing room in what turned into a 3-0 victory on Tuesday, Oct. 1. Wright won the ball on the edge of Blackburn's penalty area, cut inside side before drilling it past keeper Aynsley Pears in the 48th minute. Coventry (2-5-2, 8) is 20th place out of 24 teams in the English Championship.
TWO WEEKS IN A ROW
Forward Folarin Balogun - who was selected to the U.S. squad for the friendlies, but was withdrawn due to injury issues - struck for the winning goal in the 22nd minute for Monaco in its 2-1 home win over Rennes in French Ligue 1 on Saturday, Oct. 5. Balogun, who tallied for the second straight week, has scored three goals for first-place Monaco (6-0-1, 19).
Likewise, midfielder Paxten Aaronson found the net for the second week in a row for Utrecht in its 3-2 home triumph over RKC Waalwijk in the Dutch Eredivisie on Friday, Oct. 5. Aaronson has three goals for second-place Utrecht (6-0-1, 19), which trails leader PSV Eindhoven (8-0-0, 24).
MLS GOALS
Midfielder Kellyn Acosta scored his third goal of the MLS season in the Chicago Fire's 4-3 away defeat at Charlotte FC on Wednesday, Oct. 2.
Left back John Tolkin connected for his second goal of the campaign in the New York Red Bulls' 4-1 road win at Toronto FC on Wednesday, Oct. 2.
SUPPORTERS' SHIELD WINNERS
Inter Miami CF secured its first Major League Soccer's Supporters' Shield, with a 3-2 away victory over the defending MLS Cup champions, Columbus Crew. That means goalkeeper Drake Callender and midfielder Ben Cremaschi and Julian Gressel and their teammates will have home-field advantage in the playoffs. Miami (21-4-8, 71) leads second-place Columbus (17-6-9, 60)by 11 points in the Eastern Conference.
