ATHENS, Georgia (July 13, 2024) – The U.S. Under-20 Women’s Youth National Team tied Mexico 1-1 in the first of two friendly matches between the teams during a training camp to prepare for the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup as Princeton forward Pietra Tordin scored the USA’s lone goal.
Mexico, which defeated the USA, 2-1, in the championship game of the 2023 Concacaf U-20 Women’s Championship, struck first in the 32nd minute when forward Julia Quiñonez combined with midfielder Alice Soto. Quiñonez heel-flicked the ball toward the end line to Soto, who crossed it back to a sliding Quiñonez for the score.
It didn’t take long for the United States to respond. U.S. midfielder Riley Jackson took a free kick after Mexico defender Isabela Esquivias picked up a yellow card in the 40th minute for pushing down U.S. forward Jordynn Dudley. Jackson’s delivery deflected off a Mexico defender in the box and Tordin buried it in the right side of the net on her first touch.
In the second half, the teams struggled to convert in the attacking third. U.S. midfielder Ally Sentnor put the ball in the back of the net in the 77th minute, but the offside flag was already up.
The U.S. starting lineup featured four professional players and U-20s played six NWSL rookies, including subs Ally Lemos and Sentnor. The other pros were Jackson (North Carolina Courage), Lemos (Orlando Pride), Sentnor (Utah Royals), Savy King (Bay FC), Claire Hutton (Kansas City Current) and Emeri Adames (Seattle Reign FC).
The teams will meet again for a friendly at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 16, in Athens at the Jack Turner Soccer Complex at the University of Georgia. Both teams are preparing for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia, which starts August 31.
