A dozen members of the U.S. Men's National Team pool stood out for their clubs last week.
Gio Reyna made the most of his first start with Nottingham Forest, assisting on his first goal for the English Premier League side.
Brandon Vazquez and Alejandro Zendejas performed their scoring heroics for their respective Liga MX teams, Monterrey and Club America, who eliminated two Major League Soccer sides from the Concacaf Champions Cup.
Tanner Tessmann recorded his first brace to keep Venezia in the running for automatic promotion to Italy's Serie A.
Malik Tillman, Josh Sargent, Caleb Wiley and also celebrated goals, while Kristoffer Lund, Timmy Tillman and Yunus Musah set up goals.
In net, goalkeepers Ethan Horvath and Gaga Slonina kept clean sheets.
A GOOD START
In his first start for Nottingham Forest, Gio Reyna helped produce a goal through a corner kick in a 2-2 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers in the English Premier League on Saturday, April 13. Reyna, on loan from Borussia Dortmund, swung in his kick that Gibbs-White headed past goalkeeper Jose Sa. Before Saturday's match, the MVP of the recent Concacaf Nations League finals had seen only 90 minutes of action over six games as a substitute. The result left Forest (7-17-9, 26) in 17th place, one point above the relegation zone.
DOUBLE TROUBLE
Brandon Vazquez and Alejandro Zendejas scored for their respective Liga MX sides as they helped show MLS teams the exit in the Concacaf Champions Cup quarterfinals.
Zendejas struck for a goal for the second successive match against the New England Revolution, slotting the ball home in Club America's 5-2 rout at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on Tuesday, April 9. Off a counterattack, Zendejas put away Brian Rodríguez’s feed past goalkeeper Earl Edwards Jr. for a 4-0 lead in the 57th minute. America won the aggregate goals series, 9-2.
Vazquez did his damage in the 31st minute to start Monterrey to a 3-1 home triumph over Inter Miami CF in the second leg on Wednesday, April 10. He scored an unassisted goal against keeper Drake Callender. Monterrey won the series, 5-2.
Zendejas and Vazquez have scored four goals apiece in the competition.
In the semifinals, America will meet Pachuca and Monterrey will face the Columbus Crew.
TWO FOR TANNER
Tanner Tessmann struck twice, once in each half, as he secured his first professional brace, boosting Venezia to a 2-0 win over visiting Brescia in Italy's Serie B on Sunday, April 14. He lifted the hosts into a 20th-minute lead and in the 90th minute, scored off a Nunzio Lella assist past goalkeeper Luca Lezzerini. This season, Tessmann has six goals for third-place Venezia (18-8-7, 61), which is vying for promotion to Serie A. The top two teams earn automatic promotion. The third- through eighth-place finishers will compete in the playoffs. With five matches left in the campaign, the club trails second-place Como (19-7-7, 64) by three points.
NO. 15 AND COUNTING
Josh Sargent tallied his career-best 15th goal of the English Championship season, helping Norwich City to a 2-2 draw at Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday, April 9. The 23-year-old Striker lifted his side into the lead in the 11th minute as he put away Ashley Barnes's headed pass, slipping the ball from six yards past goalkeeper James Beadle. Norwich City, however, could not hold a two-goal advantage. After a 1-0 win at Preston North End on Saturday, April 13, the Canaries (21-14-8, 71) are in sixth place, still in line for the promotion playoffs to the EPL.
RED-HOT TILLMAN
Two weeks ago, Malik Tillman's attacking theme was assists, as he set up three goals in two matches for PSV Eindhoven. On Saturday, April 13, he scored a goal for PSV in its 6-0 trouncing of Vitesse in the Dutch Eredivisie. Tillman doubled the host's lead on the half hour, scoring past keeper Eloy Room for his seventh league goal of the season. Luuk de Jong’s header was saved by Room before Guus Til’s follow-up attempt hit the left post. An unmarked Tillman slotted home the rebound. Tillman has been red-hot in PSV's most recent 11 contests with two goals and seven assists. With four matches remaining in the season, PSV (26-1-3, 81) owns a nine-point lead over Feyenoord (22-2-6, 72).
OPENING HIS ACCOUNT
Caleb Wiley put way his first goal of the MLS season in Atlanta United's 2-2 home draw with the Philadelphia Union on Sunday, April 14. The 19-year-old left back pass took a pass from Edwin Mosquera on the left side and drilled a 30-yard shot on one bounce past goalkeeper Andre Blake to give the hosts a 2-0 advantage in the 63rd minute for his sixth career goal. Atlanta, however, could not hold the lead and settled for a tie.
THREE HELPERS
Kristoffer Lund set up Palermo's lone goal in its 1-1 draw at Cosenza in Italian Serie B on Saturday, April 13. Lund assisted on Alessio Buttaro's score in the 44thh minute that gave the visitors a 1-0 edge. Palermo (14-10-9, 51) solidified its sixth-place position.
Timmy Tillman recorded his second assist of the MLS campaign in Los Angeles FC's 2-2 tie at the Portland Timbers on April 13. The 25-year-old midfielder, who has recorded at least a point in four successive games, sent a through ball to Mateusz Bogusz. Bogusz tallied his first of two goals of the match as he drilled firing a left-footed shot past goalie Maxime Crepeau for a 1-1 tie in the 21st minute.
In his first start for A.C. Milan since Dec. 9, midfielder Yunus Musah set up A.C. Milan's first score in its 3-3 draw at Sassuolo in Italian Serie A action on Sunday, April 14. Musah assisted on Rafael Leao's goal that whittled Milan's deficit to 2-1 in the 20th minute.
KEEPING IT CLEAN
Goalkeeper Ethan Horvath registered his third shutout in 13 starts since joining Cardiff City in its 1-0 win at Birmingham City in English Championship action on Wednesday, April 10. Horvath rarely was tested. Cardiff (18-20-5, 59) is in 11th place with three games remaining in the season.
Zack Steffen made five saves as he notched his first clean sheet of the MLS season for Colorado Rapids in their 3-0 victory at the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday, April 13. Steffen's last shutout in the domestic league was a 3-0 triumph over Colorado on May 25, 2019, before he transferred to Manchester City on July 9. The win extended the Rapids' road unbeaten streak to four games (2-0-2). Colorado (3-2-3, 12) is in fifth place in the Western Conference.
