NATIONAL TEAM HIGHLIGHTS

  • Kept a shutout in the 1-0 win against Honduras in the Concacaf Nations League semifinal.
  • Played five of six matches and kept three clean sheets, helping the USA to a runner-up finish at the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup.
  • Made seven saves and earned Man of the Match honors in the USA’s 1-1 draw with France on June 9, 2018 in Lyon – Les Bleus’ last match before going on to win the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
  • Voted 2018 U.S. Soccer Male Player of the Year, becoming the first player to win the award in his debut year with the USMNT.
  • Made his USMNT debut coming on at the start of the second half in the 0-0 draw with Bosnia-Herzegovina on Jan. 28, 2018 in Carson, Calif.
  • Was part of the USA squads at the 2013 and 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup. At the latter tournament he playing all five matches and keeping three clean sheets along the way.

 

2022 FIFA WORLD CUP QUALIFYING

  • Appeared in six qualifying matches, going 4-1-1 and earning two shutouts.
  • Made four key saves and kept the clean sheet in the 2-0 win against Mexico on Nov. 12, 2021 in Cincinnati.
  • Also started the return fixture at Azteca, making two saves to earn a shutout in the 0-0 draw on March 24, 2022.

 

CLUB HIGHLIGHTS

  • Joined EFL Championship side Middlesbrough on loan from Manchester City prior to the 2022-23 season.
  • Served as the “Cup” goalkeeper for Manchester City from 2020-2022, appearing in 21 total matches.
  • Backstopped Man City to the EFL Cup championship during the 2020-21 season.
  • Following the 2018 season, Manchester City agreed to pay Columbus Crew a $7 million dollar transfer fee to bring Steffen to England, but stayed on loan with Columbus Crew during the first half of the 2019 season.
  • Upon joining Man City in summer 2019, immediately went on loan to German Bundesliga side Fortuna Düsseldorf where he played 17 matches.
  • Joined Columbus Crew midway through the 2016 season and went on to make 76 appearances for the side through 2019.
  • Earned MLS Goalkeeper of the Year, MLS Best XI and MLS All-Star honors in the 2018 season.
  • Signed with Bundesliga club SC Freiburg in 2015, spending on season with the club’s second team.
  • Played two seasons at the University of Maryland, racking up 48 appearances.
  • Briefly played in the Philadelphia Union Academy, but spent of most of his youth with FC DELCO and West Chester United.

 

PERSONAL

  • Born to Stefanie and adopted by Derek Steffen; has two sisters – Katy and Lexi – and two brothers – Ben and Cole.
  • After the tragic murder of George Floyd, launched the VOYCENOW Foundation in the summer of 2020, which aims to bring together athlete ambassadors to use their social media platforms to ignite positive change and become allies for the Black community.
  • Hailing from the Philadelphia suburb of Downingtown, counts Philly Cheesesteaks as his favorite food.
  • Played baseball until age 14 when he began focusing on soccer.
  • Says one person he would love to meet is Justin Bieber.
