Samantha Mewis is fast becoming an impact player in the center of the U.S. midfield. At six feet tall, she’s a ball-winning force who is opportunistic on the attack. A UCLA alum, she helped bring home the 2013 national championship her junior year. Drafted to the Western New York Flash, she started all 20 regular-season games as a rookie in 2015, and in 2016, she helped the Cinderella team win the league championship by scoring crucial goals in both the semis and the final. In 2017, while the Flash franchise was sold and rebranded the North Carolina Courage, the core of the team remained the same. Under Mewis’ young leadership, the team continued to excel, winning the 2017 and 2018 NWSL shield. As the 2019 World Cup approaches, Mewis’s winning mentality will be a huge asset for the USA.
The Sister Impact
The Mewis sisters, two years apart, grew up competing in everything, from soccer games to Easter egg hunts. As the younger sister, Samantha fought to keep up with big sister Kristie, a star forward. After spending youth careers constantly vying against each other, they went in separate directions for college: Kristie opted to stay close to home, attending Boston College, while Sam forged her own path by heading out to UCLA. “In college, we both became our own people which made us closer than ever,” says Samantha. “She is my best friend and I need her so much.” In the NWSL, Kristie plays for the Houston Dash, while Sam plays for the North Carolina Courage. They follow every one of each other’s games and always know they have someone to call.
The Journey
In 2016, Mewis was selected as an alternate for the U.S. Olympic team. Being that close to the dream motivated her to elevate her game. “I never wanted to be that close and not make it again,” said Mewis. She returned to her NWSL team, the Western New York Flash, hungry to make an impact and scored big-time goals in the playoffs to help her underdog team make a surprise surge to the NWSL Championship title. While it was only her second professional season, she stepped up and became an impact player. Knowing she could do it at the club level gave her the confidence to do it for the National Team—she started every USWNT game in 2017. In the NWSL, Mewis was selected as a finalist for the 2017 NWSL Most Valuable Player Award and in 2018, she helped her team win the NWSL Championship.
