Having come through the San Jose Earthquakes Academy before becoming a collegiate standout at the University of California, Nick Lima returned to sign as a Homegrown player for the club after two years in Berkeley. A strong rookie season with the ‘Quakes in 2017 earned the right back a January Camp invite in 2018.

He went on to make his MNT debut to much acclaim during the side’s friendlies against Panama and Costa Rica at the start of 2019. With those matches in hand, Lima will look to create more inroads as the MNT builds towards the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

“MAN OF THE MATCH” DEBUT

Though disappointed to not have made his international debut in 2018, Lima remained motivated to return to the MNT scene. His next chance came the following January, when new head coach Gregg Berhalter summoned the San Jose right back to his first camp in charge of the MNT.

As Berhalter looked to implement a new style of play, Lima’s work-rate and understanding of how the right back fit into the coach’s new system stood out and he was rewarded with his international debut against Panama on Jan. 27, 2019.

BACK WITH BERHALTER

Lima would go on to collect his first assist, winning the ball at midfield before serving up a picture-perfect cross for Walker Zimmerman to head home in the second half. For his efforts in the match and ability to learn a new, complicated role, Lima became one of the few MNT players all-time to have earned Man of the Match honors in their debut.
