Hailing from Wyndmoor, Pa., Daniel Lovitz attended Elon University before his selection by Toronto FC in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft. A steady contributor during his time with the Reds, the left winger was part of the squad that went to the 2016 MLS Cup Final, departing Toronto following the season.
Finding another home north of the border, Lovitz signed with the Montreal Impact in 2017 where a circumstantial transition to left back led to his summons to MNT camp and his senior international debut in January 2019.
A SWITCH THAT CHANGED HIS CAREER
Having played most of his career as a left winger, Lovitz’s desire to make the 2017 Montreal Impact roster necessitated switching positions. With the team looking for a back-up to starting left back Ambroise Oyongo, Lovitz - who came to the team’s preseason’s camp as a trialist - went along with the experiment of playing on the back line. The transition worked, and coupled with a long-term injury to Oyongo, Lovitz made the position own by summer 2017.
Still with the fortitude to push forward, Lovitz’s play the past two years stuck out to new MNT head coach Gregg Berhalter, who summoned the 27-year-old to the 2019 January Camp. The call-up was Lovitz’s first at any level and led to his breakthrough on the international stage, as he played the full 90 minutes in a 3-0 win against Panama on Jan. 27 and 2-0 victory against Costa Rica on Feb. 2.
FIRST IMPACT PLAYER WITH THE USMNT
Along with that first National Team call-up, Lovitz set a new mark with his club in Quebec. Upon entering the field against Panama in January 2019, the defender became the first active member of the Montreal Impact MLS side to earn a cap with the U.S. Men’s National Team.
