Carli Lloyd is the epitome of a player who thrives under pressure. The New Jersey girl lives for big moments and comes through when it matters the most—scoring game winners in college, in the SheBelieves Cup, in the 2008 and 2012 Olympics gold medal games, and most spectacularly, in the 2015 World Cup final. With 26.7 million watching, she scored three goals in the course of fifteen minutes, including a 50-yard wonder strike from half field.

Ultra-competitive

While any other player might be satisfied with a hat-trick in the World Cup final, Lloyd is always looking to one-up herself. “I don’t want to be remembered for one World Cup final. I want to be remembered for my whole career. It was just a stepping stone, and I want to continue to get better,” she says. Even though she is thirty-six-years-old, age doesn’t mean much to Lloyd and her legendary work ethic is still the same. “People read into my age, but they don’t see me every day—there’s no doubt that I will fight to end, to hold that trophy again in the summer of 2019.”

Full Circle

Lloyd has traveled all over world with the National Team and has been a part of two U.S. women’s professional leagues—playing for the Chicago Red Stars, Sky Blue, and Atlanta Beat in the WPS; then for the Western New York Flash, Houston Dash and Sky Blue FC in the NWSL. In 2017, she also spent a season with Manchester City because she wanted to challenge herself by living abroad and experiencing the Champion’s League.

Now nearing the end of her career, Lloyd has come home to play for Sky Blue, not far from where she grew up in Delran, NJ. She married her high school sweetheart, who she occasionally plays against during pickup games and training. The pair recently bought their dream house in a secluded patch of woods. “After training, I get to come home every night,” says Lloyd, “which really makes it feel like everything has come full circle.”
